Moving Farm Machinery: A Freight Guide for Buyers
Freight can add a lot to the cost of a machine bought interstate. Sorting it out before you buy avoids nasty surprises and missed collection dates.
Get a quote before you commit
Give carriers the pickup and delivery towns, the make and model, and the approximate length, width, height and weight. Photos help. We can source quotes from specialist machinery carriers across Australia: request one at checkout, or ask us before you bid.
Know how it will be loaded
- Check the listing for whether the seller can help with loading.
- Machines that drive can usually walk onto a trailer. Implements and non-runners may need a crane, forklift or loader at the seller's end.
- Confirm who is providing chains, straps and labour.
Oversize and heavy loads
Wide or heavy machines such as headers, large tractors, dozers and wide implements may need permits, pilot vehicles or set travel times. Your carrier arranges this, but it takes time and adds cost, so allow for it. Removing a header head, loader or duals can sometimes bring a load back within standard limits.
Timing
- Pay your invoice first. Items must be paid for before they can be collected.
- Check the collection date on the listing or invoice. Clearing sale lots often have to leave the farm within a set window.
- Give the seller the carrier's name and pickup time.
On pickup and delivery
- Ask the driver or seller for photos of the machine as loaded.
- Inspect it when it arrives, before the driver leaves if you can.
- Contact us within 48 hours of collection if there is a material difference from the listing.
